I’ve seen plenty of issues over the years, but relative to the number of brakes out there? Like you say, they’re ubiquitous. Certainly mountain biking is demanding but some of the daily commuters I’ve seen… wow.  It probably really comes down to expectations. The acceptable performance margins, especially in a truly budget brake max-power package, are going to be much tighter on technical trails v. slogging it out on asphalt. The basic resin pads also do glaze rather easily and the brakes are usually paired with crappy resin-only rotors and those could be factors.
