I think the difference is that a super-enthusiast living tight otherwise can still buy, and maintain, a super-premium bike on an average (Canadian) salary if they choose to. But if bike companies want him to keep dribbling the money ball he needs to be able to sell it for something at upgrade time.  I mean, aside from the question of what % of those Mercs (or other luxury cars) were leased, not owned, in the first place it’s certainly going to be more likely that the initial owner had a high amount of disposable income/credit.
