I had trouble with two units dying just like that. It only happened if it rained while transporting the bike. In the end, the problem was water getting in through the cable hole. Once water gets into the unit it can find its way into the battery compartment. A few drops of silicone caulk fixed the issue, but it was super-frustrating before we got it figured out. Both times I sent it in to be replaced I was pissed I had to spend a few rides with my GX shifter. I know nothing about design or manufacturing, but it seems to me like it should be easy to seal the battery unit and any sensitive electronics off internally from the rough and ready parts like the servo motor, no?
