I didn't see anything in their pdf about cable length, but I wonder if something like what you experienced could be avoided by strapping the unit to the down or seat tube. Seems like that would get the unit mostly out of spray's way and definitely out of sight of the chain. Is there any reason a longer cable and housing would not be advisable?
