I see a pairs competition within a large field where a team of two riders have to cooperate - instead of shifting your derailleur you shift gears on the other rider's bicycle (and have to stay close enough for the shifters to work). First team with both riders over the line are the winners! Another twist on the same idea would have you compete one-on-one against each other on a short course and intentional try to make the other rider slower with bad gear choices.
