You're NOT out of contention, depending on frame setup.
I've actually had the most success and the most fun doing a Long-Shock & Mullet treatment on my 130mm RockyMountain Instinct. Going from a 7.5x2" to 7.875x2.25" brought me to 153mm rear travel, but sent the BB skyward and steepened every angle... until I put a 650B wheel out back, then I wound up 0.5° slacker, stock BB height, added travel, and with a new air shaft to bring the fork up to 160mm, I now have a 160/152mm mullet rig on a remarkably light frame that is capable of insane performance, because despite being a 2014 frame, the geometry is bang-on modern.
It is definitely possible, and I do feel a whole lot happier that I'm pushing this bike to the decade mark, enough to where I'm quite content about the amount of carbon bling it has acquired over the years.
