a few thoughts:
* i REALLY appreciate that trek did this (and that you covered it so thoughtfully dave)
* i understand why their report didn't mention steel, but from an informational/education standpoint it is a shame as iirc as a frame material its carbon impact is proportionally even more favorable to aluminum (6x) than aluminum is to carbon (3x)
* ebikes used to replace commutes by car rapidly achieve a net-carbon positive impact. those used to shred trail not so much, unless of course they are replacing/offsetting shuttle trips
