We stayed rigid for 20" just for the lighter weight, lack of complexity, and just how much unserviceable garbage is out there. For 24" we'll be running a lowered 26" fork. I have a really nice custom Fox 32 from ~2012 that's fresh.  I feel like everything gets easier the closer they get to riding our size of bikes. Including hand-me-downs.
