When I first moved to a place that had really long climbs followed by really long descents I put on a non-narrow/wide granny ring. I could shift down to it manually without stopping. Then, at the top of the climb, I'd stop to put on kneepads, eat a bit, and shift to the bigger narrow/wide chainring. It worked great! Thanks for continuing to publish articles about doing things because you can, not because it's the best/most profitable/easiest way to make a bike work!
