MaxxTerras are actually just fine with the inserts I've used - any time of year. There's also some uncertainty about how soft MaxxTerra remains when temps drop below 7ยบ Celsius. Without inserts softer rubber is much more vital, but with them I have run some hard, crappy, flimsy tires with excellent results. The difference is that dramatic.
