I guess it has to with being able to get your inside pedal up in case you have
to lean over. Also, should you have get a foot out it's going to be the inside
foot. In which case you're going be happy if the outer foot can freewheel to
the bottom as Mammal already wrote.
Probably going into turns with the inside foot forward instead of the usual
one (e.g. right foot for me) is going to make you a more confident rider round
'dem turns…
