Given what a big deal going from 23c to 25c to 28c tires was I think Cam nails it here.  I met a guy a few weeks back (dry day) riding a 1980’s full-Campy Raleigh and it was a beautiful example of how mature that side of the sport is since the bike is still basically being made by hundreds (thousands?) of small builders not to mention all the Soma’s and Surly’s. Sure, more (easier) gears now and some bikes have discs but hardtail geo has changed more in 8-years than road bikes have changed in 40.
