The cable routing of the frame has a big influence on the shifter resistance. sharp turns are a no no.
A new cable and housing is never a bad idea.
Also try reducing the clutch tension. They come way too stiff from the factory and again has an influence on the shifting.
I really think the XT paddle resistance is on par with XOs I've tried.
The culprit has always been the cable routing...
