When I still lived in an apartment (and even at my last townhome) my neighbors would be able to tell you exactly why a pump like this is better than an air compressor.
That being said, if you don't have to worry about noise complaints, Im with you that the air compressor seems like the better choice. For ~$50 dollars I have a setup that does everything I need including inflating my car tires if they get low.
