In late 2014 I fractured a bunch of ribs on one side. Then two months later I
was out on my first real ride and fractured a bunch on the other side this
time. I'd let some of my weight training slip in the six months preceding so I
committed to double up on everything once healed up. Since then I've got a 2x
bodyweight deadlift and 1.5BW back squat and I've walked away from a few
crashes of the same magnitude as the ones that broke me. Lifting heavy is the
best way to practice bracing for those sorts of impacts.
