@Dave - I'm just making one of these at the moment (self isolation project). I found a schrader valve that screws directly into the gauge thread. It saved me drilling a hole and installing the valve. I'm just sorting a few fittings for exit hose to use the existing threads then it will be finished.
Also these things can take a massive amount of pressure (mine is rated to 250 bar). Did you ever think of filling it with a compressor and using it a an air tank? You would have to be careful with the delivery of the air into the tyre but would save pumping it up each time you needed to use it.
