Re. SRAM their drivetrain unit evolved out of their purchase of Sachs Germany so they have plenty of experience with hub gears. Back in early Y2K they did a sweet 1x drivetrain for city bikes that used a regular derailleur/cassette mounted to a 3-spd gear hub. In some ways a similar concept to Hammerschmidt which simply moved the internal gears to a better place in terms of weight balance. Re.
