FSA/Cannondale use a spring. Race Face's higher-end cranks, DUB, Cane Creek, e13 all use a tensioner. Honestly, I think the Aeffect / Aeffect R system is as simple as any except the FSA which is just doing to same thing with a metal coil spring.
That said, I've never heard of whatever it is you're experiencing. I'd say the best bet is to reach out to RaceFace and report back with what they say. Genuinely curious.
