I may have taken a cheap shot and you're right that they still offer a good option, but I think this is part of the problem at MEC right now - they're (rightly) catering to a more urban crowd, but I fear they're letting go of the awesome value for money Bahco saws out there in favour of stuff that's more expensive and - as in the case of socks for flip flops (how fucking stupid are those?) - not that useful. They have tons of $pendy stuff - great, sell as much of that as you can - but you still have to keep the crunchy folks coming in there, they're the ones that have been shopping at MEC since the 90s. The first thing I bought at MEC was a crocheted hacky sack in 1990 or 91 and that's when I became a member.
Your recommended saw is awesome and as a builder, you should rightly want a good one. I did recommend a $150 tool, so I hear ya there ;) Buuuut, that $18 Bahco has 2500(!) 4-5 star ratings on amazon. It's a slam dunk, especially at that price. And as a builder, surely you would support the idea of more people carrying saws that wouldn't normally do so (ppl like me) but DO b/c it was light, cheap, and effective.
/rant, sorrynotsorry
