Interesting you're a big fan of the super square tire. A lot of people thought it was too square but guess everyone is different! I find the new tire still hooks up better than a DHF, so guess you're not a Maxxis fan either. I also came off the second generation tire too and didn't find any weirdness with the new one. Rode in super wet conditions last week and it hooked up great on wet slabs and roots. That said I saw that backcountry.com has a bunch of the second generation tires still for sale for cheap, as does MEC....Stock up!
