I disagree with the harder rear tyre compound theory/ advice. I dislike (intensely) a back tyre that does not grip to the same level as the front tyre I just successfully rode across something.  I fail to understand why a so called $10 saving or an extra 5-10 days wear would be worth the additional risk of losing the rear tyre and potentially crashing.  Continental Black Chilli Apex Protection works for me in its various tread patterns for carcass strength, feel, side wall slash resistance and overall the longest lasting, fastest rolling stickiest compound I have found.
