I haven't ridden the AM9 yet, but I'm not surprised by your comment. I believe
the AM5 and old AM45 were intended as gravity MTB shoes. The AM9 is likely in
the same boat. If you're looking for a stiffer the sole the M200 would be the
obvious choice from Shimano. For me personally I like the degree of flex in
the sole of AM5 / AM45.
