It certainly seems like an area where folks could make gains. We're all much harder on rear wheels than fronts, so why not make a lighter and softer front wheel? I think the only folks doing that were Crank Brothers. But then saying that I know folks who also habitually break front rims that are considered extremely strong / "indestructible".
