Me too, or possibly the outsized influence XC racing has held over mountain
biking for 30+ years.
It is notably the driving force in drivetrain design though? It's why Shimano
can't give up on the front derailleur, SRAM has released 12-speed, and the
GEAR section of every mountain bike forum is 1/2 full of posts asking ~ "is it
normal for my chain derail when I back pedal in my easier gears".
