Hmmm, makes me wonder if commuting on an old single speed road or hybrid bike might be more economical. Maintenance would be limited to the basics on a single speed, commuter tires are cheap and a decent used frame or complete bike should be attainable for under $200. Your MTB wouldn't be seeing anything other than trails so maintenance would be a lot less intensive.
