Does the regular Newton look crazy square? Seems like the side knobs are basically the same height as the center. Not sure I'm a fan of that, but the ST looks pretty good. It's almost like their 2.6s are meant for more "normal" width rims maybe?
That said I like a rounded profile. I have 2.6 minions on 27mm internal rims and the shape is great for me.
