I've also never owned a carbon bike and hope I never do. I sold my last aluminium bike in 2005 and have been on steel since. A good 29HT has changed things a lot. You can ride a lot and not get beaten up like I used to on a 26HT.
Edit - 6 years on and I'm still returning to this article.... (and still no carbon)
