For me living where there is not alot of great riding now compared to before (Vancouver to Regina doesn't get much bigger change)  I find that I have to push every ride to feel like it's really worth it. Maybe it's the mid life thing or maybe I have that gene that makes  perfectly normal people take up triathlon as life is no longer a 'challenge'. The best rides I have are with my son just going around the park. I can recall being 5 or 6 and following my brother (2 years older)  and his slightly older friends everywhere we were allowed to go. And 35 years ago in Winnipeg that was pretty much anywhere you could go and get back by supper. Maybe my best biking self is not the one that finally cleared that steep tree start on Fromm (the vertical 7 feet down roll in) or the rock drop (in 2007 when it was still a drop). Perhaps it is just the one who enjoys pedalling around and feeling the sun and wind and the love of two wheels (and 3 kids, only 1 biking so far). My biggest challenge then for biking is yet to come I think. It is letting go enough in this slightly more dangerous world to let my kids go off and explore the world of two wheels (meant to write of and not 'on'). Anyway,  sorry about your back. Glad you recovered in the end. That's an accomplment to push through physio of which you should be proud.
