I get what drives So and So's mind wandering. It's related to synesthesia, and it's all about some complex sensations we can experience from our senses getting mixed and mashed together. Some people can see the color of a musical note, while others can smell it. In this particular case, the out-of-place stimulus of the DOT fluid's smell got him completely dislodged. Now that I think about it, this might give his girlfriend a new attack angle: she could simply dip a few drops of that very unique perfume she uses on special occasions on his camelback's straps or something along that route. It works both ways, since women are something between 7000 and 70000 times more sensitive to smell stimulus, so be careful with what you use and where.
