I like belt loops, too. Not sure if it's because sometimes (usually before or after a ride) I have car keys, phone, and wallet in my shorts (and sometimes a multi tool) and no velcro system I've encountered has been robust enough to withstand that weight (understandably).
The other case for belt loops is that I often ride with a hip pack and when pedaling, it often pulls down on waistband of my shorts, whereas a belt counters that and also provides a small barrier for the waist strap of the hip pack.
