I guess it depends on where you ride, Kos. Where is that, btw?
In our neck of the woods (as well as many other necks I can name) riders of
all abilities are faster as a result of dropper posts. No fiddling around at
the top or bottom of a climb or in rolling terrain. A performance gain that
can be shared by novices and racers alike (B'ham's example above
notwithstanding) is very far away from your contention that it's over-hyped or
unnecessary.
For my part I would say that remote lockout levers are over-hyped and
unnecessary, but I'm not an XC racer…
