For manuals and catwalks I always tell people to practice on a soft grassy
field with a back brace or a back pack with a pillow and no hard things and
don't be afraid to loop backwards. That way people can get to know the tipping
point of their bike in a relatively safe way. Using flats is a good way to
eject safer.
