The Sound of the Ride

The sound of tires on dirt is like music to our ears, and Mastro Manuel Scheidegger has put together a tasty little sampler of all the auditory delights he can conjure on a ride in the countryside. You're going to want headphones for this one.

You got to wonder why people wear headphones when they ride? You miss so much.

I agree - the sound of tires, the bike, my breathing...lots of stuff to focus on. I used to like wearing headphones while road riding (solo only) but that's because road riding around here is pretty boring. On a mountain bike, though, whenever I try it with headphones, it's one-and-done.

I did a ride in Thailand. Off road and road mix. 3 days. I remember being so shocked that someone put their headphones on and even more shocked that they just wanted to go 'head down and power it out' in a place where the view and experience really were amazing. I did go to Headphones at one point. Actually, embarrassingly enough when I went the length of Japan. Not all the time, but when particularly exhausted it really did help. I recently dropped them from Mtb riding and have been enjoying the lack of accompaniment. One thing I did notice they helped with was cutting out the sound of wind. I used to just have the buds in with no music on occasion and just cutting the sound of wind rushing by made me less of a 'scaredy cat' rider as it took away the sense of speed. I am now free of that 'performance enhancing' aid though.
