Rocky Mountain Bicycles Acquired by New Ownership Group
The future of Rocky Mountain has been uncertain in recent months. With a debt of 70M CAD, Rocky Mountain was granted creditor protection on Dec. 19th, 2024. Most staff were laid off, and the office in North Vancouver was closed.
Ernst and Young, the court appointed monitor, was instructed to accept offers to purchase the company. That process has concluded and a Quebec-based ownership group has been selected.
Rocky Mountain was founded in Vancouver, B.C., in 1981 by Grayson Bain, Jacob Heilbron and Sam Mak. It was acquired by Procycle in 1997, and the corporate HQ was moved to St. Georges, QC, while R&D and marketing continued in Delta and then North Vancouver, BC.
We'll be pursuing this story and will provide more updates as they become available. For now, the great news is that it appears as though R&D activity is set to resume in North Vancouver.
Details from the press release below.
A New Era for Rocky Mountain: A Group of Canadian Entrepreneurs Takes the Helm
Montréal, May 9, 2025 – Rocky Mountain, an iconic Canadian mountain bike brand, is entering a new chapter in its history as the company transitions to a new group of four Canadian investors, Chaos Sports Inc.
Rooted in the Past, Focused on the Trail Ahead
This transition is for everyone who’s helped shape Rocky Mountain’s story—from weekend warriors and curious newcomers to seasoned racers and trail builders.
Born from the trails and driven by a passion for the sport, Rocky Mountain will remain deeply rooted in British Columbia, where it all began. To that end, our research and development activities will resume in North Vancouver, a cornerstone of cycling culture that continues to inspire the company’s vision today.
A Seasoned Team to Carry the Love the Ride Spirit Forward
The new ownership team brings diverse expertise, a shared love for cycling and the outdoors, and a clear commitment to growing Rocky Mountain while staying true to its DNA. Three of the new owners are also behind Maui Bikes, a Québec- based company specializing in electric bikes – reflecting their active engagement in the industry and deep understanding of today’s riders.
- Jonathan Bourgeois, co-founder of Raccoon Skis and partner at Maui Bikes, brings hands-on experience, an innovative mindset, and a deep connection to outdoor culture.
- Christian Thibert, President of Thibert Inc. – a North American leader in distribution – brings a focus on innovation, customer service excellence, and strategic partnerships. His long-term vision is aligned with Rocky Mountain’s repositioning efforts.
- Patrick St-Denis, with a background at Oakley and The North Face, offers keen consumer insight and strong expertise in brand strategy.
- Jean-François Grenache, a marketing and business development specialist, is known for revitalizing brands in complex market environments.“Rocky Mountain is more than just a name—it’s a mindset, a culture, a way of experiencing the ride. We’re stepping in with humility, energy, and determination. Our goal is clear: to honour what has made Rocky strong for over 40 years and to open a new chapter of growth,” says Patrick St-Denis, spokesperson for the group.
Service Continuity and Warranty Support
The 2025–2026 period will mark a strategic relaunch, with the ambition of establishing Rocky Mountain as a global leader in mountain biking. The new owners are committed to upholding the highest standards of quality, service, and support. In the short term, business operations, customer service, after-sales support, and partner commitments will continue as usual. All warranties offered by Rocky Mountain in recent years will be fully honoured. Bike parts and components will remain available.

So it's still owned by French Canadians who make weird ebikes? Some things don't change.
Generally good news. I'll echo Brian's comment that they can hopefully get the team back together. It was always a pleasure dealing with the Van office and I wouldn't wish that to change for anybody going forward. Fingers crossed they can get some budget together for reviving athlete support sooner than later.

I invested in one before the announcement last fall. It is indeed a pretty great motor. I got it because the fat bikes were on sale and the geo on the blizzard was preferred to the Bigfoot (Shimano) or Giant Yukon (Yamaha). I probably would have chosen the bigfoot if it were Bosch, which it surely will be on the next generation. Pretty happy with the blizzard, I just hope I can get parts for it. The main pinion sprocket has a short lifespan, apparently, and they are unavailable at the moment.
