North Shore Bike Park announced the closure of its 65,000 square foot indoor bike park facility this week, scheduled for March 30th. The park opened on July 1st, 2023 in the old Sears store at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver. The short timeline of this closure has raised concerns amongst residents, many of which point to the Bike Park as a irreplaceable asset to the community. This announcement is especially alarming given that the facility just invested in a new foam pit, rearranged air bag area and more newly built terrain.
Capilano Mall is owned by QuadReal, the real estate arm of the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, which manages BC's Public Sector Pension Plans with $250 billion in assets under management. Rumours on social media suggest that the bike park is going to be replaced by an indoor pickleball facility run by Fairgrounds Racket Club, which has partnered with QuadReal to open a host of pickleball facilities. Fairgrounds has a few locations in Ontario, and is set to open a location in Downtown Vancouver next month, likely in Pacific Center.
These circumstances are especially untimely given the new zones the park just opened and its importance to the riding scene in the North Shore Community. Following announcement of the closure, a group of North Vancouver residents have started an online petition to save the North Shore Bike Park.

It is with immense regret that we must share some unfortunate & unexpected news. Our beloved facility, which has been a welcomed new home for active families, passionate athletes, and a thriving biking/skating & roller skating community, will close on March 30th at 10PM.
We deeply value the North Shore community and have been honoured to provide families with a local and well-loved indoor recreational facility. Because of this, we want to be transparent and share this information as soon as possible, even as the timeline continues to evolve. We will provide details on our web site shortly.
We have just completed the new Foam Pit, reorganized the Airbag Zone and added new terrain so please come and enjoy this brand new addition.
Spring Break Camps are still on and there’s still a few spaces so sign up now.

We will be providing information on refunds and other options in the next week.
We also want to express our deepest gratitude to our incredible staff, volunteers, and community members who have made North Shore Bike Park such a special place. I wonder if racing enduros in the US will count as the kinds of tourism/spending that Canadians will no longer want to do. I know I'm shopping for a new bike and US brands are off the table.

While this has been an expensive endeavour, with over 300k in lumber alone, overall it was successful and pointing toward better days with more programmed traffic on the horizon. Without the end of the lease, the park would have continued to operate and perhaps thrive in the future.

I have ridden the OSO a few times and it's a very well sorted machine that rides great and entirely unlike the disastrously received Cyber Truck.
I definitely would.

It might be a bit too futuristic for some, but it's an incredibly adaptable bike. Bump up the travel to 170? Yes. Dual crown compatible? Yes. Plus using Bosch's proven Gen 4 motor isn't a bad idea to be able to reduce cost and ensure customers get a reliable product. Plus whoever chose the parts did a bang up job: GX Transmission, XT brakes, 220 rotors, dh tires, and a full carbon frame for 6k USD. I just hope they warned their vendors that were holding Oso's in inventory ahead of time. Otherwise a price drop of that magnitude would push the sell price of the bike below cost.
