Monthly Wallpaper: January 2025

A note from photographer AJ Barlas on this month's photo selection:

The last few weeks in Coastal B.C. have been a stark reminder of just how wet, dark and cold it can be out on the trails here and when these conditions strike, few things can be done to make an action photo work with what little natural light is available.

Fortunately, one incredibly fun way to shoot in such conditions is to drop the shutter speed way down—1/30th of a second here—and start panning. Despite the relatively slow shutter speed, this shot was still taken at 1,000 ISO, mostly because I opted to bump the aperture to f5.6. It’s always exciting when reviewing the images from a pan to see whether the camera was directed successfully as the rider flew through what’s typically a narrow window. The excitement levels when we saw this one come out were running high.
