Could someone explain PROTECTED riders?

Fairly certain it's riders who placed in the top 20 of their division in 2014.

As Matt Lee mentioned they are the top 20 from the 2014 standings. It means they will get to race all of the 2015 DH finals as long as they leave the start gate in qualis.

I'm pretty sure its the top twenty in the current overall standings. For this first race only, the top twenty at the end of last year are protected (ie. compete in the main race independent of their qualifying results). From here on out in this season it's based on the standings at the time.
