David Martin is a photographer based out of Manchester, UK, but as you can see from his photos, he travels the UK and continental Europe in search of mountains and bikes. Check out his 2012 show reel below, and a selection of high res photos with captions for colour…
Many a time during 2012 I found myself pointing a camera at friends riding bicycles in the mountains. Some of these photos and the stories behind them made print over the course of the year, some of them did not. It is these photos that have not yet seen the light of day presented above. Whilst telling the story behind every frame would take up to much time and space one common theme runs throughout every photo above. Each is a reminder to have fun on a bicycle, and get out into the mountains once more.
Summer hits the woods. The highest point in the local woods may only be 160 meters above sea level, but there are plenty of 30 second thrills hidden away. Rider: Ste Waugh
Cumbrian Forest. Whilst winter storms tend to prevent riding on the high passes and ridges of Cumbria, there are still rocky loose trails to be found in the more sheltered woods on the lower hills. Rider: Josh Dodd
Hiking for Trails. There are descents of nearly 1000 meters on the sides of Cumbria’s bigger mountains. However, with no fireroads or farm tracks, the majority of the trails can only be accessed by hiking. Rider: Dave Topham
Descending Cumbrian Fells. The aforementioned near 1000 meter descent. Rocky loose singletrack through the heather. Rider: Dave Topham
Another Cumbrian trail. More rocks off the back of England’s highest mountain. Rider: Dave Waugh
I shoot & ride in Cumbria a lot. They are probably the closest ‘big’ mountains to Delamere/Manchester. The riding is up their with the Alps for me. Rider: Dave Waugh
Autumn in the woods. The lack of hills in the local woods doesn’t prevent fun being had. Their is a cool little scene based around the network of trails we have here, enough for mates races and group rides nearly every day of the week. Rider: Matt Steadman
The annual Alps trip. It sounds foolish to say it but the Alps are a big mountain range. I tend to eschew the famous resorts to the west and head for the more unexplored (by bike at least) hiking trails further east. This is the Austrian Tyrol. Rider: Callum Martin
More Alpine hiking trails – this time Davos in Graubunden. Rider: Callum Martin
Fresh loam in Alpine forests. Austrian Tyrol again. Rider: Callum Martin
One more of Cumbria: The always-wet rocks in the Lake District make for testing riding, another ‘staircase of doom’ to tackle. Rider: Callum Martin
From the slick and slimy to the dry and dusty… what’s your favourite shot of the bunch?
