Fire Lines

Video Patagonia Films

It's hard to sort through all the videos that cross our editorial desk, however, every so often one pops up that fits into the 'no brainer' category. A few years ago it might have seemed like trail builders were having a moment, but thankfully that moment is stretching into a time period with a sense of permanence. And rightly so.

Unfortunately, in recent years wildfires seem to have done more damage than normal to some really special riding areas, not to mention communities and towns in BC, the western states, and beyond. Wild fires are nothing new, but recent events highlight the importance of supporting the efforts of organizations like the SBTS and tireless advocates like Greg Williams.

“Fire Lines,” a new film from Patagonia in partnership with the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, features SBTS Executive Director Greg Williams as he reexamines the role recreational trails can play in forest management and economic recovery in the wake of the devastating 2021 Dixie Fire. The concept is to build multiuse trails and reinvigorate fire-devastated economies by bolstering outdoor tourism.

In northern California, climate change and 150 years of forest mismanagement have led to some of the most catastrophic wildfires in the state’s history—including the Dixie Fire, which in 2021 devastated the Lost Sierra’s already struggling communities. In the face of that destruction, one group turned to trails for hope and to the past for a better future.
