North Shore Ripper – Courses Announced

The North Shore Ripper has been the local’s bike race for eleven years now, with this year promising a gnarlier, steeper, faster, and crazier race than ever before. Ladies and Gentlemen, Obsession: Bikes is proud to present The Revenge of the Ripper.

For those of you who have never experienced a Ripper before, it’s a fairly straightforward format: Three days, three unique races, the entire North Shore mountain biking community, and one great weekend. This is an event for the local North Shore rider, taking you down the trails you’ve ridden hundreds of times, while timing your progress for credible proof of how fast you can rip.

Each event will be on a different zone on Mount Seymour on the weekend of June 8th, 9th, and 10th, with proceeds from all three events going towards building and maintaining the trails we love so well.

Here’s a more in-depth look at the different races.

The Adidas Eyewear Chainless Downhill:

How many times have you proudly boasted to your friends “I get so much speed pumping this trail, I could ride it chainless.” Now is your chance to prove just how speedy you and your bike are, as well as your pumping and cornering prowess.

The course will be at 7pm on Friday the 8th on the Richard Juryn Trail, starting just below the lookout and ending along the second section of the fire road. You must remove your chain at the top (there will be mechanics to help out if needed) and take it down with you in the bags provided. Sending you one after the other in time trial fashion, it’s up to you to pick the best line down the trail without pedaling – or stopping.

Registration for this event  will take place between 5 and 6:45pm at Inter River Park, and is $20 to enter before race day. After party and awards will be hosted here after the ride.

The Specialized Euro Enduro:

This is something brand new to the Ripper, and a race format that has been explosively popular in Europe and is gaining popularity in the North American mountain bike scene. The Enduro is essentially your average weekend ride with your buddies: a steady climb to a trailhead, a ripper downhill ride, repeat, repeat. In the race version, we time you on three descents and give you a specific timeline to reach the top of the next trail, adding an endurance factor to the classic downhill format.

The Euro Enduro is on Saturday June 9th.  Racers will be organized into three groups based on categories and will each run through the course in a different order. The DH laps will be as follows:

1) Start at the top of Corkscrew, down to Incline, left at the Powerlines, down to Pingu, and finish bottom of Pangor.

2) Start on Severed D at intersection of C-Buster, follow Severed to the new C-Buster connector, finish c-buster and turn right onto Applicator, and finish on Bridal Bath

3) Start at the Ridge Runner Plateau on Bottletop, follow Bottletop to the end on Fisherman’s Trail.

The Enduro will test not just your speed on the downhill, but your climbing abilities and your knowledge of Seymour’s trail network. The racer with the lowest combined time of the three descents is the winner!

As a bonus, Specialized is sponsoring a “timed climb” stage race during the Euro Enduro. This will be an optional (but highly recommended) stage on Bridal Path from Fisherman’s to Hyannis. This will not affect your Enduro time, but the speediest male and female on this bonus stage win a gear package from Specialized.

Registration will again be at Inter River from 8 to 9:45am with racers beginning to make their way to their specific starting trailheads at 10am. It’s $40 to enter before race day, and awards, beer, and food will be back at the Park after the ride.

The Trek Slash Super D:

This is the Ripper’s classic downhill race, done as a time trial and the last haul before shenanigans and after parties at Inter River.

The race starts at 10am on Sunday June 10th at the height of Seymour’s mountain bike trails on TNT. Riders will head down TNT, hanging a right onto Cabin Trail and down Dale’s Trail. Ride down Severed D towards Upper Sticks and Stones with a grande finale into the Blair Range. Registration for the Super D is $40 before race day so register soon, or…

All Three?: The North Shore Ripper Trilogy

If you want the ultimate challenge and experience (and potential bragging rights), race all three events on the weekend! The catch is that you must ride each event on the same bike with the same set-up. When you meet at Inter River for registration on the Friday, your bike descriptions will be recorded as well as pictures taken, so you better rock the best set-up for all events!

The male and female racer who has the lowest cumulative time over all three events will be crowned the Lezyne Ripper King and Ripper Queen! As well as a year’s worth of boasting and superiority, there will be awesome swag packages at stake. Claim your title…registration is $90 in May!

This is an event for the whole family!  It is held in conjunction with the Mountain Equipment Co-op Bike Fest at Inter River Park, where there will be loads of activities, demos, food, and swag for kids of all ages.

A festival base camp, ton of free SWAG, and a large amount of proceeds going directly to the NSMBA are just some of the many reasons to come on out for a great weekend of riding and racing your bikes on the legendary trails of Mount Seymour.

Now that the courses have been announced, it’s time to get your pre-ride going! The Enduro sounds like a big day on the bike, but more relaxed than an XC race. Rip it up!
