Sprockids Fun Day
GIBSONS, BC – Capilano University Mountain Bike Operations Program (MBO) students are hosting an event Saturday, April 28th at the Sprockids Bike Park in Gibsons, BC to celebrate 20 successful years of the Sprockids Bike Program. Come out, bring the family and enjoy exciting activities during a day of fun with the riding community.
Saturday, April 28th will be devoted to the celebration of the 20 year anniversary of the Sprockids Bike Park founded and started by Doug Detwiller. What started off as a self esteem and anger management program for school students quickly evolved into a multi faceted program which has now successfully engaged thousands of young people in mountain biking while teaching them important life skills and values. Sprockids has spread across 17 different countries worldwide and opened Sprockids Bike Park, the first municipal bike park in North America.
Sheane Reid, Parks Planner Sunshine Coast Regional District has this to say about the Sprockids Program:
“Sprockids Programs is truly a Sunshine Coast success story where thousands of Sunshine Coast youth have learned the sport of mountain biking and the many benefits of a healthy outdoor lifestyle. It also most encouraging to know that the young people who have experienced the Sprockids Program also have an appreciation for the environment and respect for other users of backcountry.”
Sprockids Fun Day will showcase a multitude of activities and events starting with a VIP walk for land managers and media to look at the work done by the MBO students and view the new park signage at 9:30am. Starting at 10:00am activities will include skills park sessions, family rides, a free lunch as well as a jump demo with appearances from pro riders such as Ben Glassen and Geoff Gulevich.
Don’t worry if you don’t have your own bike or gear, you can still come out as there will be demo bikes and gear on site so everyone can enjoy the fun! The day will finish around 2:00pm with a ceremony including draw prizes.
Sprockids Fun Day will be a memorable event filled with fun while learning new skills and connecting with other fellow outdoor enthusiasts and mountain bike lovers within the community. We will be honouring the work of Doug Detwiller, the Sprockids volunteers and the Sunshine Coast Regional District for their involvement with land management and support over the years.
Saturday, April 28th will be a day of celebration and fun from its start at 9:30 am until 2:00pm when we conclude the day with a free barbeque lunch, jump demo and closing ceremonies. Come out, join the fun and celebrate 20 successful years with many more to come. We hope to see you all there!
