2009 Nsmb Team

The nsmb.com team has evolved to the point where it is like a farm team.  The team, in its eighth year, had its biggest year for exposure, results and most importantly spreading the nsmb vibe in the mountain bike world.  It is also the year with the most changes to a team roster ever. More on the 2010 team later.

The nsmb team has a bunch of missions including gaining exposure for its sponsors.  The 2009 Nsmb team is proudly sponsored by Toyota, Dennys, Fox, Sram, Avid, RaceFace, Maxxis, Dakine, Specialized, Syncros, Adidas Eyewear and the Whistler Bikepark. In the process the guys do photo shoots like this two page spread in Bike Magazine with Curtis and Dylan filming for Kranked Revolve shot by Dan Barham :

The crew appear in films and create their own video (see each rider,s clips below). They head out on the road to a variety of races and contests all over North America and Europe.

All team riders are involved in building and maintaining trails around their home bases in Southwestern B.C. And all the guys are involved in spreading the Nsmb word on their local trails, dirt jumps, skate parks, bike shops and community events.

Mitch Chubey

Mitch has continued to grow as a rider in slopestyle, dirtjumping, downhilling and slalom. After 2008’s huge season with big finishes in Europe at Qashqai and Crankworx Colorado Mitch made a commitment to go even bigger this year culminating in an impressive 6th place finish in the Crankworx Slopestyle (Click here to see some vid of his accomplishment).

Chubey put in thousands of miles competing, filming and shooting all over North America. Mitch appeared in Decline and Bike magazines, and of course right here on nsmb.com, pulled some impressive race results with a first in mens DH at the Canada Cup finals as well as a 2nd and 3rd in DH and DS at Sea Otter.

His outstanding season has culminated in his decision to grow even further by going on his own this year. He will still be contributing to nsmb as he continues to push himself and the sport further. All guys on the team wish him the best of luck in his pro career.

Curtis Robinson    Curt’s Denny’s player card shot.

Curt had a big year too. In addition to building for Kranked Revolve and starring in the segment that is arguably the best in the movie, he posted impressive race results in DH, slalom and the Red Bull Exodus race. Curtis appeared in Bike and Freeride Germany magazines. He also was on three TV shoots for Italian and American Outdoor Life Network as well as  Ride Guide. Curtis has decided to move on from Nsmb to further Coastal Crew Productions this year. Best of luck Curt.

Dylan showed up to our AirPrentice contest a few years ago to hang out with his friends who were in the event. We needed a 12th guy due to a cancellation, knew he was good and put him in. After that we put him on the nsmb team as our videographer that year and the next. His riding progressed to such a high level that last year he became a full team member.

Like Curtis, his close buddy, Dylan built and rode in Kranked Revolve. He also was an editor on the project and the Rejekt webisodes which he also rode in. In addition, Dylan had a segment in Aaron Laroque’s What’s Next. Dylan travelled, shot, built and rode in North America and Europe. He is leaving Nsmb to be a part of the talented Coastal Crew along with Curtis.

Ian came to us as a runner-up in AirPrentice 3. He has appeared in films, magazines and contests; his best being an amazing 10th place finish in slopestyle at Crankworx 2007. This season in addition to shooting and building, Ian joined Eamonn on a two episode shoot with Ride Guide in Colorado.

Ian is the smoothest, ‘flowiest’ rider I have ridden with and his style continues to progress. He has decided to get out of the bike game and pursue his other interests. Knowing Ian he will be good at whatever he gets into to. Good luck Shirley.

Justin Wyper    Justin shooting with Ian Hylands and Don Hampton.

Justin goes big, charges at everything and usually comes up with styling technical tricks. Sometimes Wyper is Wype out as was the case this year and last at Crankworx:

    2009 wasn’t as bad as 2008 where he compound fractured his Tib-Fib. Can’t keep this boy down.

Justin competed at Claymore, a bit of Crankworx Whistler and Creston Goat Style (he got to ride in the sasquatch costume).  He shot and filmed in B.C. and California.

Eamonn Duignan    Rockin’ North Shore Irish style.

Every court needs a jester and every team needs a joker. Our lucky Irishman Eamonn is that guy. Turns out he also rides well. Eamonn took time off from his business, GreenCoast Rubbish, to spend two weeks in Colorado with Ian Nelson shooting for Ride Guide.

Eamonn, our team’s pre-eminent blogger laid it all out in many a blog. In addition to this he is a regular rider for stock photo companies, a trail builder and maintainer, sponsor of the North Shore Mountain Bike Association and he is ‘that’ guy.

Jerry Willows    Rig still stylin’ after all these years.

Jerry is the cagey veteran on the team with years of building innovative trails, riding large and going fast. I rode a trail with Wade Simmons the day after he rode the same trail with Jerry. He said he was looking forward to taking it slow because he was scaring himself too much trying to keep up with Willows the day before. Jerry has moved away from his scary stunts in pursuit of loam riding the last few years – but he still goes huge when the occasion arises. He is part of the Specialized bike testing team regularly giving reports to the engineers on their new designs. Over the last few years he has also become a photographer of note.

Jerry continues to ride hard getting out to film and shoot. He has appeared in Bike, Decline, Singletrack, Mountain Bike UK and Freeride Germany.

Andrew Sherry has been a finalist in a few Airprentice contests. This year his style, skills and attitude made him an easy pick to join the team as the sixth Airprentice. Shrew has been shooting and filming a lot this year both before and after Airprentice. He has a styling segment in What’s Next, a number of photo shoots and several mini-vids. It’s been great having Shrew on the team and we look forward to the new year with him.

Mason Mashon    Mason railing hard at Silverstar.

Mason is our newest team member added this year at Interbike. We have been following Mason since our first Airprentice where he was a runner-up. His big mountain lines, smooth style, maturity and experience in front of and behind the cameras made us want to sign him this year. He will be a great new addition to the team.

I’ve been doing more managing of the team this year. Still getting out for rides with the bros:

I have a grant from Mountain Equipment Co-op to re-furbish a trail on Mt. Fromme to create a beginner trail. Quite a change from my early attempts at building trails like Air Supply. I have been spending way more time on my Enduro little bike than my Demo big bike – a sign I’m sure.

2010

The team is morphing and growing this next season. We will be adding another team member soon, changing a few sponsors but still going after the same goals we started the team with eight years ago. See ya on the mountain.
