2014 Juliana Furtado Primeiro

With ten different models in the lineup and two more in the pipe, Juliana Bicycles has the widest range of women’s-specific performance mountain bikes on the market. As an offshoot of the Santa Cruz Bicycles brand, Juliana set out to do better than just make bikes with stereotypically girly colours and narrower handlebars.

We’re at a point in mountain biking where brands have identified an untapped market and are approaching the female ridership through products that may or may not be built specifically for women. Some companies tout geometry that’s engineered specifically for the female body, but for the most part we are seeing bikes that could be ridden by anyone, with graphics and build kit tailored to lighter and smaller riders.

Juliana’s bikes are based on existing Santa Cruz models. This means they share technology, keeping prices lower than if new molds were created and so on. The Furtado Primeiro that we have for review is the same 125mm VPP platform seen in the Santa Cruz Solo (aka 5010). While the geometry is the same as those bikes, the build kit is completely different, and there are a few women’s-specific touches.

We’re passing the Furtado on to local shredder Leanne Tompkins for a platform review from the female perspective. Leanne is comfortable in technical terrain but also isn’t afraid to get out for an all day pedal. Stay tuned for the full review but in the meantime, dig in to some photos and an overview of the top line Juliana Furtado Primeiro.

Juliana uses branding and parts spec to distinguish itself from the Santa Cruz brand.

The script style font is unlike anything else out there, and it grew on me in the time it lived in our house.

Santa Cruz’s VPP designs carry over to the Juliana line. The Furtado is a 125mm 27.5″ platform.

The Juliana bar is not simply branded; it’s actually been specially designed for smaller hands.

Juliana calls this a “Compact Bar/Grip System”. What does that mean? A normal bar is 22mm in diameter all the way to the end; the Juliana bar tapers to 19mm between the brake/shifter clamps and the grip. The result is a grip with a slightly smaller diameter than a standard “thin” grip, but with more cushioning. Of course, this system is easily retrofitted for a standard bar if you prefer thicker grips.

The Furtado Primeiro comes with a RockShox Reverb Stealth dropper post, mounted on the top right. In practice, having the dropper post on the same side as your rear shifter is not so convenient – but if you went to a 1x drivetrain that lever would swap nicely to the bottom left.

I’ve spoken with a number of ladies about the stock Juliana saddle and they seem to like it. Your mileage may vary.

The 2014 Juliana Furtado Primeiro. At $5999 USD this is not a cheap build, but the carbon frame is beautiful and every part has been chosen without compromise. The aluminum-framed Furtado Segundo comes in at $3299 if you’re looking to get into the Juliana brand for less investment.

Leanne’s going to be riding this little beauty all over BC as it’s full on riding season here now. Check out the full line of Juliana bikes HERE

So it's a 'womens specific' rebranded 5010 with a tapered handlebar. And for $6K, you get a 3×10 XT build (a $500 retail value).

A similarly-equipped 5010 runs for $7000. The Furtado is actually a good value in Santa Cruz terms.
