Swiss DH:  A Photographic Journey
Words ~ Chris Winter.
Photos ~ Christophe Margot

Air Carve
Joe Schwartz makes me laugh and he rides his bike like he was born on it. This nugget photograph was taken at about 3000 meters on a perfect blue bird day. The Monte Rosa, one of 20 4000-plus meter peaks around Zermatt, can be seen in the background. Check out the wispy clouds.

Bushwack
In the Alps, descents seem to go on forever. Often it’ll take a full day to do three laps of 6000-plus foot descents. By the time you reach the tree line, you’d have 30 minutes of non-stop descending under your belt. You feel so dialed on your bike by that point, it’s insane.

Ice Baby
This shot could be very rare one day as the glaciers across the Alps are melting at a scary rate. This particular glacier feeds the Rhone, one of Europe’s major rivers that reaches the Mediterranean in the French town of Marseille. Ride bikes, don’t drive cars, help save mother earth from us.

Jesus Christ
Did you know that Jesus was a trail builder? Yea, after he ate the bread, drank the wine and walked on water he and John and Peter went out to work on a new descent. OK, not really but I bet he would have killed it on a bike. Can you imagine the shit he could have pulled off? Think about it.

My Friend Cliff
The Swiss have built the craziest trails. Some trails run along these impressive waterways called bises that were used to move water from alpine glaciers to towns in the valleys below. We came upon this little number one day in the middle of nowhere.

Rockwall
You know how some photos make you want to ride your bike so bad like right now that you have to stand up and walk around stare at your bike just to cool off that burning yearning uneasy feeling inside that doesn’t go away? For me, this is one of those photos.

Schwartz Bros
This beautiful image captures the playfulness that the Schwartz brothers exude. Here, oldest brother Joe leans in to test the balance of middle brother Peter while youngest brother Evan contemplates life, love and beauty. ”Why am I here?” asks Evan, “Who am I?” and “What’s that smell?”

Sunrise
There’s something about a sunny fall day that’s especially soothing and easy going. I think it has something to do with the fact that plant life is preparing to rest for a while. You feel like there’s no rush like in springtime. Like a plant.

Tunnel
This is a cool photo of local Swiss rippers Rene Wildhaber and Philippe Meir. Wildhaber is the 4-time winner of the Megavalanche in Alpe d’Huez and winner in Peru too. Not only is an unbeatable endurance downhiller but he happens to be one of the most down to earth and low key dudes you’d ever meet. Solid.

Zermatt
When I’m at my therapist’s and she says “OK, now I want you to close your eyes and go that that happy place that we talked about. No, not the place with the pink elephants and naked ladies, the other place. That’s right. Now I want you to picture you there being happy and feeling special. ” This is where I go.
