SRAM X1: The Most Affordable 11-Speed Group Yet

SRAM has just announced the most affordable 11-speed group yet. The new X1 group knocks another $235 off the complete group price of X01, giving riders more choice for both purchase and maintenance of their 11-speed setups.

X1 cranks will run on the same 94mm bolt circle as X01 allowing down to a 30 tooth ring up front. In addition to a new shifter and derailleur X1 features a new cassette, pinned together rather than machined from a single piece – and there’s a new chain to go along with it, compatible with existing 11-speed setups.

$313 for a cassette? FFS. I need to make a LOT more money before I start shelling out that kinda coin on wear items for my bikes. Big dollars for stuff that lasts (Shimano brakes, suspension components, wheels, frames that hold up, etc.) makes sense to me, big dollars for stuff that lasts less than a year seems like dumb money.

As with XO1 isn't the point here to make these groups more attractive to manufacturers who are buying 5000 complete sets? If so then this drop will mean the group shows up on even more complete bikes next year which ultimately means things will get cheaper still?

That being said I love being on Shimano and with the new 11spd XTR and my RF Narrow-wide up front I can go legit 1×11 for way less than an X1 conversion. But then again if I buy a complete new bike next year I would definitely take XX1 or X1 bike over paying extra for a bike with that goofy 2×11 XTR kit.

After yesterday's comments on FB I looked up MSRP on XTR 10-speed and it's actually more than X1. XT is significantly cheaper, however.

thanks for breaking down the cost of individual components. so that's $662 for the chain, cassette and drl. add your favorite n/w ring to your current cranks and you're good to go for just north of $700. that's a lot to pay for a drivertrain compared with 10 speed bits, but i guess sram have changed the paradigm here, and are have reset the pricing equation accordingly

Just one more level down and I may actually care. A 300 dollar cassette and a 230 dollar derailleur is still awfully pricey given what else is available.
