Money Shots Week Six Winner
Jay Sinclair's choices...
Powered by:
Kokanee Crankworx @ Whistler

March Prizing brought to you by Helly Hansen

We're half-way through Month Two of Money Shots, and the great pix keep rolling in. This week, we decided to change up the judging a bit and hand the reigns over to Jay Sinclair, one of nsmb's resident shooters.

And as promised, this week's winner takes home a new Mace Volition jersey and Shackle gloves (pictured below). Without further ado, here are Jay Sinclair's selections for week six of Money Shots.

- Cam McRae

Shot Disqualifed:  already published.
This silhouetted shot is the Money Shot for me this week. After coming out of a long snow filled winter here in Vancouver, I long for what this image not only shows, but what it emotes. Although shot in France, for me I can almost taste the Kamloops dust in the late afternoon as one of the young guns cacks one off the lip into the sunset. The framing is perfect with the clouds backlit, sandwiching the rider between the setting sun and the silhouetted earth below. The image is perfectly balanced. As far as inspiration to ride, it couldn't get any better than this.

Shot ineligible because Rene won week 8
2nd place - I have seen a number of point of view images and this one is no slouch. I love the feel of motion - the slower shutter speed and flash blur create. This image is the epitome of what riding is like in Squamish. I love the lush vegitation and saturation in this image. You can almost feel the rainforest. I must admit it was a very close call for me between the sunset winner and this. The textbook framing of the sunset gave it the slight advantage in the end. The framing of this shot is a little strange, but I liked it none the less.

This shot from Crankworx moves up to first place for week 6
This image is very strong and I think if entered earlier in the competition it might have done better than third. I hate to say it, but although this image is great, I have seen numerous images just like it recently (including the honourable mention in week four and the winner of week three). I think this image is better than the other weeks, but the repetition pushes me away from it winning. This image would have fit in nicely in a magazine article covering the event. Very solid shot indeed.

The runner up - Although it's a “Butt Shot”, this image reeks of style. I like the late afternoon light backlighting the entire area with golden rim light. The rim light helps create separation between the rider and background, and gives us that summer feel. The flash fill is well balanced and highlights the rider. Altogether a very nice shot that would be more than at home in Dirt magazine - they LOVE this look. If this was a shot of a 360 from the same vantage point, it would have been Money with the face shot.

Thoughts - Although not a strong picture as far as the standards go, I really like what this shot has to say. When you ask anybody about what they love about nountain bikes over other bikes out there, the usual answer is, “I like that you can ride it anywhere”. This image makes me think that statement is definitely true. The ice hanging from the railing and chipped on the ground makes me wonder about what the ride to this place was like. Freezing cold and stormy, the bike still made it there. Photos are not just about technical correctness and lighting to me, they tell a story, or in some cases make you think about how the image came about. I like this image for what it makes me think. As others have highlighted and this image shows, indeed you can ride mountain bikes anywhere.

Week seven is in full swing, so have a look at the latest entries and see if you can pick a winner. And if you're a shooter, be sure to enter your own shots for a chance at some of your own Mace gear.

Think Jay has made the best choices so far? Think he's on crack? Here's the place to talk about it.
