New 9-42 Tooth Cogset from e-13

Photos Cam McRae

Every time we leave the Hive’s booth, we have to reconcile the lack of grown-up talk with the amount of laughs we have. Big events like Sea Otter remind me of all the great people that I still haven’t ridden with. Somehow that includes the guys from the Hive. We are good at drinking their beers, though.

Among other new pieces expected from e-13, the 9-42 tooth cogset was the most interesting. We don’t have a lot of detail except that weight falls somewhere between XX1 and XTR, and the price will be less than both of them. For now it’s XD driver compatible only, and planned in 10- and 11-speed versions. How’s that for spreading the accordion?

We can’t talk about the fastening system. Because we don’t really know and it’s kind of secret anyway. But did we mention it goes down to Nine?

Cam would like a redo on this photo.

The cassette in the picture is a 10 speed 9-40T though.

There are already durability issues with the alloy 42T on an XX1 wearing out well before the rest of the cassette. I can only imagine it being an even bigger issue with more alloy rings like this.

I can't imagine buying this now that Shimano will be offering an 11spd cassette that fits on my existing freehub. Though I will have to spend extra on a derailleur and cassette. But it sounds like there are people who really want that 9t or 10t cog so now there's an option for them. It's good to have choices.

It might still prove to be cheaper to do an XT 11spd upgrade than buy the E13 cassette.

Yeah… everything is just speculation until some pricing is published.

It might make sense for current SRAM 1×11 owners when their cassette wears out.

I'm curious to see the gearing on the 10 speed version.

A low:high ratio of 4.67 for e.13 Vs 3.82 for shimano is a pretty decent gain though don't you think. Assuming things were roughly equivalent in terms of shifting function and durability (I'm on a limb, I know), adding in the cost of the freehub to that of the cassette + derailleur + shifter might not be that much of a stretch. As you say elsewhere here though, the cost of the e.13 cassette itself might be prohibitive…

Shimano should have done a wide ratio 40t 10 speed cassette….
