Hey Neighbour – Cam McRae

Video Matt Dennison

Hey Neighbour is the brain child of Seb Kemp and it’s coming back in 2015. To warm you up we’re posting our favourites from the first season. For the first ever episode, Seb chose to use Cam McRae as his guinea pig. Cam was a natural choice not because he founded NSMB, but because he perfectly fits the intent of the Hey Neighbour series: people who have had an impact on the fabric of MTB, but who may not be well-known outside their immediate circle of influence.

Below you’ll find an excerpt from Seb’s article as well as Matt Dennison’s video. Look for the link below to see Hey Neighbour in its original form with Seb Kemp’s excellent, unabridged verbage.

Hey Neighbour – Cam McRae

So it makes total sense that we start with Cam McRae, who is one of the first people I met who lives on the Shore. Cam McRae is the captain of the good ship NSMB. Many of you will know of him, some of you would have ridden with him, but perhaps many more have no idea who the chap behind this site is. I have had the pleasure of getting to know him as a friend over the last few years, and he has helped me find my way around North Vancouver since moving here.

Cam McRae has a long history on the Shore. A long time Vancouver resident, Cam began mountain biking on the Shore—but as he says in the video, it was a baptism of fire and it took a while for him to feel comfortable here. Biking here on the Shore is more than just a fact of growing up and having his family here; he really appreciates the unique character of the trails here, and has a great respect for said trails, the community, and the legacy of the North Shore.

It’s hard to tell from the video but that root ball is a seriously slinky line to clean. Also slightly terrifying when it’s slick from rain.

I think I should clear things up. This article doesn't state that this video is from 2012.

There are 7 episodes of Hey Neighbour which can be found here:

Sorry guys if I was being a cock. I feel like this article has been presented a few times already. The only reason I know that is because I have been a regular to NSMB since 03. I feel like the site grows to be more cliquish than objective over time. I have recently heard random negative public feedback about the site. I personally have enjoyed the site over the years and thank you for all you guys have done. The site has been core to the niche, and an important aspect to mountain biking evolution. Its just that I find myself coming back less and less. Something about the 'feel'. Sorry if I'm passive aggressive here…..I suppose I just care.

Hey Rob. Thanks for the feedback. We are re-posting these on Thursdays in anticipation of a new season of Hey Neighbour in the New Year. Our audience has grown and expanded and there is a new segment of our audience that hasn't seen some of our projects - and the response we've been getting from these has been very good. Regarding your other points, I'm not entirely clear what the issue is but I'd love to hear more from you. Perhaps you'd like to send me an email? [email protected] Oddly the feedback we've been getting has been moving the other way. Lots of positive feedback about our content and improved numbers, which makes me even more interested to hear your points and those you've heard from others. Thanks again for being engaged and for being part of this community for so long!

Great video! I wish Cam was my neighbor. Not only is he one of the kindest and coolest people I know, he also is a shredder on the bike. I need more Cam in my life!

Aw shucks! Thanks Kurt. Come up and visit soon. I'll be rolling through your town in a couple of hours but we're racing home on a tight schedule so we won't be stopping unfortunately.

Cam great comment on the "dumbing down the shore" drama. If you can't find multiply trials on any of the three local mountains to challenge your skills - your spending too much time complaining and not enough riding.
