Cannondale Jekyll 2 Reviewed

It’s been an entertaining 3.5 months on the 2016 Cannondale Jekyll Carbon 2 that I first showcased in February. The bike has been adorned with three forks, a few handlebars, different tires, Schwalbe ProCore and some magnetic pedals. It has also dissected a wide range of trails from long North Shore loops to punchier, pucker-inducing lines.

The answer to the oft-asked question, “when is a review over?” is when Cannondale’s racers showed up at EWS Ireland on a ‘prototype’ of an updated version. I’m sure the new bike, with a traditional shock layout, will be much easier for Cannondale to sell. Despite this, it’s impossible to imagine, even with more modern geometry, that the replacement bike will match the qualities of the totally unique DYAD shock-equipped Jekyll.

The key to the Jekyll’s overall performance is the DYAD shock, which delivers a friction-free feel off the top and excellent traction in various terrain. With the click of a remote, you are switching the bike from a 160mm travel All Mountain rig with ~30% sag to a 95mm travel XC rig with ~20% sag. The DYAD doesn’t have a blow off so until you release the lever you are in XC mode. The Jekyll does pedal fairly well in its longer travel setting, as long as you are either focusing on smooth pedaling or frothing-at-the-mouth in t00-rabid-to-care attack mode, but there is an added benefit of the DYAD’s shorter travel setting.

On long rides, I generally struggle with some tightness in my back. If you can afford a carbon full suspension bike you might be old enough know what I’m talking about. On longer travel bikes I end up playing with my handlebar height and stem length a fair amount to find the magic spot that balances climbing, descending and comfort. This decision-making process is much simplified with judicious use of the Jekyll’s handlebar remote. Engage the remote and your weight transfers forward for climbing efficiency, even with a taller stack height. This allowed for a more comfortable position pedaling flat terrain in the 160mm setting and also a better position on the bike descending steeper terrain.

Depending on how you view the DYAD remote it could be a crutch to help you limp up the hill or a GO-Switch to help you out hound-dog your friends.

The stock fork, a 2016 RockShox Pike is a great complement to the Jekyll. The Pike’s air spring curve and very light initial damper compression match up very well with the DYAD’s linear initialization in the 160mm travel setting. On paper, the Jekyll has a conservative (for the genre) 67-degree head angle but the balance between the front and rear suspension was such that this felt spot on even in steeper and rougher descents.

The Jekyll feels very planted and confidence inspiring but not especially playful compared to other bikes in its class. It loved being driven into manky rock-and-root messes but on smoother new-school trails, even with the fork and shock rebound quickened up, it didn’t pop the way some other 160mm travel bikes can.

With the shock shut down in 95mm travel mode, the Jekyll takes great advantage of the Pike’s initial suppleness by pushing your weight into a more supportive part of the air spring curve. It feels optimized to hammer and, with some more XC biased tires and lighter hoops, I could easily mistake the performance for many 120mm travel trail bikes I’ve ridden.

That is to say, if you are looking for a capable long travel bike that climbs really well the Jekyll punches both tickets. You could get a little closer to fulfilling the ‘one bike myth’ by investing in a light set of wheels and running an aggressive semi-slick on the rear like Schwalbe’s Rock Razor, or even swapping between two wheel/tire sets depending on the day but I’m certainly not making any bold claims of a compromise-free XC-Enduro bike.

I also had the opportunity to ride the Jekyll with a Cannondale Lefty SuperMax that I tore down with SuspensionWerx in April.

The Lefty SuperMax offers very similar performance to the Pike and also uses a SRAM/RockShox Solo Air system. The Lefty Strut is at least as stiff as the Pike’s chassis, and the Solo Air system combined with Cannondale’s own damper provides a bit more low-speed compression damping hold in the initial stroke, but a very similar – and similarly tune-able – feeling air curve.

If you are a lover of the current trend towards steep seat tube angles, where I prefer a middle road between old-school-slack and new-school-steep, the Lefty would likely be your preference, but I found that the Pike was a better mate for the Jekyll than the Lefty.

I preferred the slacker seat- tube angle that the notably taller axle-to-crown height of the Pike delivered. I would have really liked to try a longer travel fork, like a 170mm Lyrik, on this bike to see how that would affect its overall descending capability. I also felt the Pike’s more-ramp-and-less-damped feel off the top was a better complement to the DYAD’s climb setting.

From my experience with my personal fork and this SuperMax it’s apparent that the air system takes more effort to equalize than RockShox forks with the Solo Air system. You have to compress the fork periodically whilst airing it up or on the trail you may find the fork suddenly goes from pretty stiff off the top to “WOW, there’s the bottom” the first time you punch it through a technical section.

This is a bit of an aside, but when I mounted the X-Fusion Trace Roughcut HLR fork, (teardown in April and first reviewed in May) on the Jekyll I had three motives: affirming my own personal set-up, testing the fork, and generating some discussion. The comments were instead loaded with a haranguing about the length of my shorts. Either not a single person noticed that I was running a 29’er fork/wheel on the front of the Jekyll – or no one cared.

I’ve been running my personal bike for almost a year with a shorter travel fork (a Lefty as noted above) that combined with a 29″ wheel matches the ground-to-crown height of the stock 650b fork/wheel. I Love It. I feel the majority of advantages of the 29″ wheel are felt up front, and by running a 650b/27.5″ wheel out back it is possible to optimize chainstay length, seat-angle, front derailleur compatibility, and suspension design.

In this case, the 140mm Trace and 29″ wheel added 1cm to the ground-to-crown height of the 160mm Pike and 650b wheel. If anything I would run a 150mm fork with a 29″ wheel, or a 170mm Lyrik on the Jekyll if it was my build. I preferred the geometry (seat tube angle, head tube angle, BB height) with the taller fork. The shorter travel Trace has quite a bit of initial support from the damper compared to the Pike, or even the Lefty, which made it a bit tricky to balance with the initially linear Jekyll, but after some playing around I found settings that worked very well for me.

Outside of my aesthetic dislike of remotes, which I forgive in the case of the Jekyll because of how much functionality it adds to the bike, my only real complaint is the gearing. The stock set-up is 30t x 10-42.

If this was my bike I’d consider running an unfashionable front derailleur. If I was working in a shop selling these bikes then Eagle would be the simple answer. With the exception of those ‘third-lap-on-a-long-day’ climbing situations, I didn’t want for an easier ratio than the 30t:42t provided, and while descending I didn’t run out of gears, except on the road. However, the drivetrain/chainslap is quite loud in the smaller cogs when you’re up to speed on technical trails. The easy solution is a larger front ring, say a 34t or 36t, that would see me in the middle of the cassette stack on more technical descents combined with a bigger cog to keep the easiest ratio approximately the same.

The Jekyll happily carries steam while pedaling, especially in the short travel mode, but it can also be hammered out of the saddle and the transition is easier than most long(er) travel suspension bikes I’ve ridden. So, who buys a Jekyll? I suppose a price conscious rider looking for bang-for-buck performance, (a new model release generally means clearing out the old ones) anyone having a challenge getting other 160mm bikes to fit properly (see DYAD), and riders looking for the ultimate compromise between XC-aggressive climbing and 160mm-Enduro bike descending.

At the end of the day, it’s a great example of the type of modern mountain bike most people living in the Shore-to-Sky corridor need, or anywhere with technically advanced descents and lots of climbing. It’s also a great argument against the current trend towards compromising with a shorter travel bike and similarly aggressive tires.

Thats all you had to say about the stiffness of the lefty? Or the lefty in general. And then you close the article asking if you'd ride the lefty? Disappointed in this article sorry to say.

Very sorry to disappoint. My closing paragraph is the bit above the __ that says there was a ton of material to cover and I'm very open to answering any questions or extrapolating any more info folks would like.

The original article was ~ 2x the words you see here and I cut a lot of info about the Lefty including a large preamble to the global Lefty Defence Force.

Back in your court. What would you have said about the Lefty SuperMax that wasn't covered here or in the initial tear down (linked in the article).

I ride a Lefty (2.0 Carbon) on my own bike and definitely feel it's a great product but other than the engineering and QC that goes into it (covered in tear down) it's a pretty simple animal so I'm very curious what you would add.

From what I can research no magazine or online publication has ever done a proper back to back comparison of a lefty vs single crown on the same bike. So after reading part 1 of your article I though great, this is cool MTB journalism and should be very interesting, especially since the MTB community is so full of contempt and bias against the lefty. Adding to that, showing the teardown of the lefty suggested these articles would go into much detail in the suspension fork vs strut shootout.

I’d wager dollars to donuts that the lefty is stiffer than the pike, yet your article comments that there was no discernable difference. How did they compare in Fore-aft stiffness, torsional stiffness? Surely the lefty had an advantage? Not even under hard braking? Seems you’re not giving the lefty a fair shake here.

Also, the tone of the article is the lower axle to crown of the lefty is more of a flaw than an advantage to the pike. Being able to run a 160mm lefty instead of a 150mm pike whilst having identical geometry is a huge advantage. You could have easily popped in a 10mm spacer in the pike to compare the forks with equal bike geometry. Yes, a bike with 67 HA is getting steep especially for shore testing… I get it.

Furthermore, the fact that the lefty is 10mm lower allowed you to run your 29er front experiment. How well would that have worked on a pike with another 10mm a2c?

The internet is full of bike reviews that are beginning to all sound the same. Focusing on the lefty vs SC more on point would have been more interesting, in my opinion.

Hi Brian,

Thanks. You'll need to get one of the German magazines to do a laboratory test to prove how much stiffer a Lefty is; out on the trail I certainly didn't notice an appreciable difference dropping into steep technical terrain hard on the brakes. I'm also not convinced that max-stiffness is the end-all/be-all but that a bike needs to be looked at as a package (frame/fork/wheels/stem/bar). For example, the new Fox 40 was intentionally made less stiff than the previous models to improve the ride quality at the request of World Cup level athletes.

I'm ~185lbs and the trails around here are pretty steep, so if either fork was not torsionally stiff enough I would have noticed/mentioned it.

I don't understand how the Lefty or Pike impacted the 29'er experiment since it was done with a totally different fork (X-Fusion).

Re. Axle-To-Crown. Definitely sometimes having a shorter axle-to-crown is an advantage. It is one of the features I like about my personal Lefty -- although secondary compared to the fork's stiffness compared to other 100mm 29'er forks (night and day), how well the air system/damper work, and the fact it doesn't creak. In the case of the Jekyll I think I was fairly clear why I preferred the Pike re. geometry?

I don't really understand why the global Lefty fan club is so sensitive. Ride what works best for you -- even if you have to hear "hey did you know half your fork is missing?", "that thing must be flexy", and "I don't understand it so it must suck" every time you hit the trail. Really who gives a shit.

Anyways, I don't disagree that a long term test on the Lefty itself wouldn't have been interesting. Specifically with a Project 321 steerer and riding it on bikes that aren't Cannondales, and more specifically on bikes where the geometry is such that a 160mm Lefty would be a perfect compliment. It wasn't in the cards this go around.

If I had lowered the Pike to the same A-to-C as the Lefty I have no doubt the Jekyll would have ridden better with the Lefty simply because the additional initial compression damping has the Lefty run higher into its sag (so the Geometry feels better). Likewise if there was a 180mm Lefty I'm certain it would have been the perfect compliment to this bike. Maybe that's more on the point you're making?

Glad to see a legit test on this bike. MBA tested it in their July 2016 issue and stated in cornering "the rebound on the DYAD feels very unique and seemed to allow the rear wheel to stick through corners" they later state that "the DYAD does not offer any performance benefit. It seems to be different simply for the sake of being different. As a result, we feel it's a "feature" that holds this bike back."  I have ridden a Cannondale Claymore (110/180 DYAD) for four years and I am sold on the DYAD. I will replace my Claymore with the Jekyll 2

If you check out the teardown piece I did with SuspensionWerx one of the best features of the DYAD - in my opinion - is how robustly the shock is designed.

Between the construction of the air cans and steel shaft all that should ever need to be replaced are seals and oil (wear parts) which makes the shock a great option for long term ownership contrasted against regular air shocks where shaft, body and air can wear are all fairly common over the long term without a regimented maintenance schedule.

It's really too bad Cannondale has moved away from the DYAD pull-shock a move they definitely made to make it easier to sell bikes and/or to lower costs not for performance benefits.

I agree. One bike shop tried to sell me on the new Jekyll and I wasn't buying into it. Another shop has the 2016 and the latest version. They state the DYAD bike is much better and that Cannondale changed it to be more user friendly.

Hi Drew,

I'm riding a Cannondale Jekyll Carbon 2 from 2015 with a DYAD and I have some issues with the setup. If I use the recommended pressure as indicated from Cannondale the Dyad feels very stiff and hard. I released some air but I'm still not happy with the settings. I couldn't find a setting to have a more sensitive bike on the trail.

Do you have any recommendations or how did you set up your DAYD? 

My rider weight is: 83 kg

How many clicks did you set the rebound in the positive and negative chamber?

Which pressure have you found out was the best in the +/- Chamber?

Hi Frankie, I'm ~185 so we're just a couple beers apart weight wise.

I ran ~380 positive and ~330 negative for a touch less than 30% sag. I ran the rebound fairly quick. The only rule there is you want your rear suspension a bit softer and slower (rebound) than the front - I like to run the Lefty and Pike quite fast.

A couple thoughts about your particular shock:

1) Pull the shock off and cycle the back end of your bike. Does it move freely? I have a friend whose Jekyll felt like ass and it ended up being that the fairly exposed linkage bearings were seized. Got them moving again with some grease and then replaced at earliest convenience. 

2) You have THE foremost Cannondale suspension service and tuning centre in the world in Germany: Eighty-Aid. If you're running ~28-30% sag and your frame bearings are good that would be my next contact.

Hi andrew,

Many thanks for you reply. 

I replaced the Aluminium bushings from the DYAD RT2 and run now "Huber Bushings" from Germany which helped.

The End runs freely in my opinion. I have to check that again. Thanks for that hint :-)

I found out that the original pressure pump isn't well calibrated. Maybe i put too much air in the Dyad so I reduced it to 300(+) and 270 (-) chamber (shown on the pressure gauge of the CA pump)

The next days I will spend some setup time on the DYAD diva :))
