Top 3 Edits #6: Taylor Loughran

With NSMB’s Movie Week we introduced a new theme: Top 3 Edits. The response to these posts was super positive – not a big surprise, as it was nice to see what inspires our team riders and regular contributors from the mountain bike world and beyond.

As a result, we’ve decided to continue doing Top 3. First up: Taylor Loughran. Taylor is the man behind Artbarn Productions and the free 2011 full web release You Like This. One of his Top 3 overlapped with Mason Mashon, so he went ahead and chose a fourth.

My experience as a film maker has been almost entirely web based. I put out one film as a DVD years ago and as far as I’m concerned it’s a dead or at least a dying format. The web is the way forward for distribution whether it be through iTunes, Netflix, or Hulu if you want to charge money for the work you are putting out – or you can toss it up on Vimeo and let it go viral.

My first pick is an edit that as a filmmaker is great to watch. It makes me stoked to go filming and reminds me of the old days when film burns were real and not a plug in for final cut pro… I’ve watched this edit by Astray Films at least a dozen times and every time I watch it I notice something in it that I hadn’t noticed before. To me thats a sign of a great edit…

What can I say about my second choice… Jacob Sutton did an amazing job. This short film has all the elements that make up a killer edit: snowboards… at night… shot on a Red Epic… oh yeah and a L.E.D suit. It’s a very simple concept that produced some amazing images – I just wished he used a Phantom Flex.

My 3rd pick is This Is My Winter. It features Xavier De Le Rue taking snowboarding to a whole new level. It’s not full of helicopters shooting helicopters shooting planes with $500,000 cineflex cameras – its just good old fashioned snowboarding meets mountaineering set in some of the most epic mountain ranges in the world. And, full web release for free… I like free…

Bonus pick #4. This is a pretty obvious pick if you ask me… the sickest athletes in the world shot by some of the best cinematographers. Once again this is an edit that makes me wake up and want to go out filming.

Taylor’s choices most definitely exemplify a filmmaker’s pursuit of his own version of cinematographic perfection. Do these visual masterpieces turn your crank?
